One of the oldest cities in Italy with civilization going back to the 7th century BC, Naples bubbles with life and attracts tourists and international students from many parts of the world.
Surely not one of the cleanest cities, Naples still has a charm of its own.
Less than an hour and a half away by car, bus or ferry lies the astounding Amalfi Coast. One of the the best coastal strips in the world and a land fairy tales are made of. The fabled Isle of Capri is only 40 minutes away by hydrofoil.
The U.S. navy has one of its bases in the city so you’ll find many Americans.
Not just Pizza, Naples is where buffalo mozzarella, parmigiana, pasta ai fagioli, Neapolitan ragu and fried sardines were invented. Compared to the prices in other major cities of Italy it’s a lot cheaper to have an evening out in Naples as long as you avoid the tourist traps. It may also come as a surprise that Naples has the most Michelin starred restaurants compared to any other city in Italy.
Between Modernity and Ancient Times
This is a city of contrasts perhaps with the greatest disparity in income. Parts of it are modern and the rest of the city is quite historical since civilization goes way way back. The locals will tell you which streets to avoid from the viewpoint of safety. While parking my car I was told by the parking lot attendant to take off my watch and keep it safely in my handbag. Similarly, when you are about to wander away into a street that might not be safe, you will immediately be told by passers by to avoid it.
Given all of the above, it’s needless to say Naples is a cosmopolitan city since it teems with tourists, American naval personnel and of course its share of international students.
The public universities in Naples have a reputation of being quite excellent and as usual we would suggest you go through their websites to find the courses most suited to you :
University of Naples Federico II
Energy, Science and Engineering for higher education
Universita degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope
The cost of living
The cost of living index says 741 $ per month exclusive of accommodation. In the opinion of the writer, apart from the annualized fees of between 1000 to 1200 $, it would be good to budget for 1000 to 1100 $ per month inclusive of shared accommodation. Just a reminder, same as many cities in Italy, many families welcome paying guests in Naples.
