284

It has been some time since we last watched animated movies. What is new in this category over the last couple of years will be introduced in this article. The weekend is just around the corner, so it is time to choose one of our weekly picks and enjoy the upcoming days off in the company of a good film.

Loving Vincent

For art lovers, this is a fascinating journey through the layers of Vincent Van Gogh´s life and simultaneously through his work. Loving Vincent, a 2017 Polish-British co-production, is drawn from Van Gogh’s paintings and presents a biography of a contradictory artist.

In this Corner of the World

Big stories are the best narrated from the angle of one individual. With WWII in the background, this is the story of a girl whose humour and cheerful approach to life are contagious. The tragic events of the War, however, gradually catch up to her, too. Dragged from a dreamy world into a circle of tragic events, she has to learn how to return to her version of normality.

Ethel and Ernest

The is the simple story of a man and woman who became a couple, sailed through their lives, had a child, and grew old together to die together, all against the background of the most important events of the 20th century. That in a nutshell is Ethel and Ernest – a story based on the comics of renowned author and illustrator Raymonda Briggs, who brought to the screen the lives of his parents.

Little from the Fish Shop

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, transfered into a small fish shop in a neighbourhood of socially marginalized people, prostitutes, and gangsters… and of course, spells and sacrifice are present even in this modern fairy tale. The Sea King is forced to migrate from the waters of oceans plundered by humans, and with his mother and three daughters become one of them. Their lives are moving along slowly and uninterestingly until their youngest daughter falls naively for an ignorant Baron.
