Long distance relationships (LDR) are not for everyone. In fact, I never met anyone who would aspire to try it. LDR is not something you can ever predict or expect, because when love calls, you answer, no matter how many kilometers away the call is coming from.
So what do you do when you find yourself in a situation where the person you like/have a crush on/vibe with/love lives in another city, country, or even another continent? The answer is you try to make it work, no matter how hard, or different from your previous relationships, it might be because although sometimes it may feel challenging, there is a good chance this person might be the one for you. So if you are brave enough to give it a try, then this article is here to help you.
Agree on the Type of Relationship You Are in
First and foremost, both parties need to specify and agree if this is an open relationship, or if you are exclusively dating each other. There is no shame no shade in either option, but it is important to be on the same page and to know what level of commitment each one expects from the other.
Regular Phone & Video Calls
As in any relationship communication is important, so does the LDR require it. Don’t let the person you are with downplay the importance of updating each other on your day-to-day life. It is important even more so to have good communication when doing long distance, as you are missing out on so many different aspects of your relationship, that ‘normal couples’ get to experience without even giving it a second thought.
If you are looking for a way to spice up your relationship give this option a try. Having romantic dates can also be possible in LDR. For example, you can both watch the same movie, while staying miles away from each other. All you need for that is your smartphone or laptop — to see each other, a streaming service — to watch something together, and maybe some snacks, and voila! A romantic cinematic experience is guaranteed to make you feel loved and miss each other a little less.
Visit Each Other Regularly
As much as it is important to talk to each other over the phone or see each other on FaceTime, or watch movies together while being apart, you have to make it a priority to visit each other as often as possible. Of course, each situation is different, and some are luckier than others — in their proximity to each other and financial stability. Nonetheless, couples that happen to be in LDR need to make it a priority to see each other in real life. Making plans for months ahead to when you need to go and visit them, will help you put some money aside for the trip, and be able to save enough for the tickets. Remember, when there is a will, there is a way.
Schedule Trips Together
When scheduling your visits to each other, why not consider the option of traveling together? This is going to keep your relationship more fun and romantic and help you create more idyllic memories together. You can book a trip to one of the places you always wanted to visit but never had the time to. Well now is the time! This way you will surely be able to keep your LDR healthy and fairytale-like.
LDR is not an easy type of relationship to be in but at the end of the day, it is worth working hard for. Because the ‘long distance’ part of this relationship is only temporary, so focus on the relationship itself and make sure this is something you are willing to pursue.
