Virtual Paid Internships at New York Historical Society


The New-York Historical Society offers internships in both museum and library divisions. Responsibilities range from modeling creative exhibition layouts to researching with curators and educators. Applicants who are selected to participate in this rewarding, yet demanding experience will be paid a stipend of $1500 or receive academic credit, depending on the intern’s school requirements. The fall internship program will run virtually on 28 October – 18 December 2020. The deadline is on 9 October 2020.

The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804 as New York’s first museum.

Now it is an American history museum and library that serves more than 200,000 students annually through the extensive range of school programs led by museum educators.

The Society also provides professional development programs and curriculum resources for teachers in order to foster lifelong learning and invite exciting opportunities for classrooms.

The Collections intern will help with the management of new collections acquisitions as well as incoming loans for exhibitions, including preparation of checklists, correspondence, and inventories.

The Curatorial intern will assist with research and bibliographies for a collections catalogue on scenes of New York (primarily 20th-century paintings).

The intern in the graphic design office will assist staff with the creation of visual materials for exhibitions, brochures, and signage.

Teacher Programs Internship takes place within the Education Department and specifically supports the roll-out of remote programming and digital curriculum materials designed for K-12 educators.

The Teen Programs intern will work on all out-of-school time digital humanities Teen Programs at N-YHS.

The deadline is on 9 October 2020.


Main criteria

Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students, recent graduates may also apply.

Interns are considered employees, and upon acceptance into the program are required to provide documentation that they are legally allowed to work in the United States.

International students may apply and are responsible for providing the same documentation and obtaining the necessary visas.
