Unusual Profession – Optometry

Today's unusual profession is optometry – a profession that is sometimes overlooked in favor of better known or higher profile occupations in medicine. Optometrists examine eyes and diagnose diseases of the eye.

 

Future optometrists must complete formal academic studies in optometry, then  undergo pre-licensing training for 12 to 15 months and pass a final exam. The leading institutions offering optometry studies.

 

Required skills:

  • Communication skills;
  • Manual dexterity, accuracy – attention to detail;
  • Knowledge and mastery of new developments in the field;
  • Comfort with close proximity with patients;
  • Strong aptitude for team play.

Future employment:

Hospital, group, or independent practice. Optometrists can also work in research or for large  corporations.

Salary:
Most practices pay from EUR 22,000 to EUR27,000 a year.
Experienced optometrists can command salaries from EUR37,000 to EUR79,000 plus.
