If you ever want to learn how to surf and do yoga surrounded by lush greenery and ocean breeze, this surf and yoga retreat in Costa Rica is one of the best choices for you.
There is something profoundly relaxing and rejuvenating about spending some time outdoors surrounded by nature and learning a new skill you still haven’t mastered. Even better if you can combine it with your passion for travel and discovering new cultures. Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a unique surfing camp that combines surfing, yoga, and mindfulness practice in a beautiful Uvita region. Here is all you need to know about this rejuvenating surf and yoga retreat in Costa Rica.
About Bodhi Surf + Yoga
Located in the Uvita region, Costa Rica, Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a family-run business founded in 2010 by four friends from various corners of the world. The founders’ main goal was to build a responsible tourism company that provides high-quality surf and yoga instruction in the relatively undeveloped area of Bahia Ballena-Uvita, Costa Rica. With a noble goal, Bodhi Surf + Yoga has evolved into a B Corporation certified and 1% for the Planet member surf and yoga camp it is today.
As the company’s website says, the main mission of Bodhi Surf + Yoga is “educating, inspiring, and empowering our stakeholders to live more sustainably through surfing, yoga, nature immersion, and community engagement.” While surfing and yoga retreats that promote sustainability are gaining attraction, Bodhi is one of the few companies “walking their talk” by collaborating closely with the local community, offsetting their emissions, and practicing a sustainable way of living throughout all areas of life.
Life at Bodhi surf camp
Bodhi’s unique feature is that it combines two seemingly different yet not so different practices that seem to complement each other. All surf and yoga camps curricula incorporate theoretical and practical parts, time for questions, and instructor feedback, allowing guests to learn and improve their skills.
The guests are staying at the Bodhi lodge, which has a maximum capacity of 10 people. The small setting allows the experience to be more intimate and personal. On the grounds, guests can enjoy common spaces such as a library, pool, and relaxing area near the kitchen. Each day guests are provided with homemade and incredibly delicious meals prepared by a local chef.
The main surfing lessons occur at the Playa Colonia beach, located within the Marino Ballena National Park, the first marine national park in Costa Rica. While surfing, you can enjoy clean waters and maybe even spot wildlife while learning the ropes of surfing.
Logistics of the retreat
Maybe less fun, but just as important part is the logistics of the surf and yoga camp. Like their whole business, the Bodhi team ensures that all your trip, from the minute you land at the airport to the minute you depart, is all thought through.
You can choose 7 or 14-day long camps depending on your availability. The 7-day camp includes 6 nights at Bodhi lodge and 1 night at a hotel in San Jose for departure day, 5 surf and 5 yoga lessons, 5 breakfasts, 3 dinners and plenty of snacks throughout the day, national park entrance fees for surf lessons, round trip transportation from San Jose and back, as well as shuttle service from San Jose hotel to the airport. Asides from all of this, you get one free day to explore the area, a walking tour of Bahia Ballena, and a trip to a waterfall.
You can choose from four different accommodation options depending on if you are traveling alone, as a couple, or even as a family. If you want, you can book the whole camp for your family (or friends), which means you can have the whole week at the lodge.
Bodhi surf and yoga camp is truly designed for travelers who want to disconnect from their normal routine and spend some time in Costa Rica recharging and enjoying the peacefulness of quiet community, sandy beaches, and lush rainforests
