When a someone is thinking there are electrical signals produced in our brain. Scientists have been working and achieved the way to pick electrical signals by sensors and send wirelessly to other electrical devices making possible for people to alter or move objects by thought alone.
The main reason and researches are directed toward developing min-control devices to help people with nervous system injuries regain the use of paralyzed parts. The picture of the brain activity is usually initiated by fMRI scanning process which can convert the exact picture what the patient is seeing to and some details of patient thinking. To reach the needed output of this scanner what precisely the person is seeing is processed with contemporary computer software that converts the visual brain activity into an optical reading mode. Even the mind reading is possible because neurons have the ability for a definite stimuli encouragement of the vertical or horizontal lines, and their output models are examples of neurons being registered.
Some of the recent advances of technology made humans around the world possible to replace the not functioning limbs with artificial ones that can be controlled by their thinking, which artificial limb operates almost the same as its born limb. Based on these scientific achievements in the 21st century we accomplished to create bionic limbs (to have an artificial body part based on electromechanical parts). In the next few lines I will mention some the bionic body parts and how they function.
An example of thought controlled device is an artificial arm which is now available and in use. Scientists are trying to develop new advanced arms which will be increased in dexterous and more natural. The nowadays forms of this bionic arm work by reconnecting the nerves from, the brain to the bionic arm which originally were connected to the hand. The nerves are connected with electrodes which communicate with the computer led motors inside the arm. The sensors of this device send back to the brain only a limited amount of sensory information, thus the brain can feel the pressure and temperature.
As Dr.Todd Kuiken explains in a scientific way reconnecting the nerves to the bionic arm is not a simple work which any doctor could do. If someone was part in an accident and sadly lost his leg or any other limb, when he/she is operated the doctors try to save his healthy nerves in order they can attach the nerves to the electrodes of the bionic arm. It takes a while even for the healthy ones to reconnect maybe more than three months to be fully connected to the arm and a lot of exercises to achieve the full control of the bionic limb. When the patient thinks of opening his hand an electrode attached to his chest detects the desire and sends the signal to the arm to open. In the bionic arm all motors can move at the same time which is not usual for a natural arm and makes it a rare creation of humans.
Stephen Hawking’S wheel chair
One example of mind-control machine is the wheelchair of scientist Stephen Hawking. The Physicist Stephen Hawking is suffering from a disease known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. He is almost fully paralyzed, but he still has enough force of muscles to allow him lead his wheelchair. By pressing the button with only left functional hand the right hand, the computer shows a list of various figures which make him possible control his chair, devices in his house, and doors. When the cursor moves through the desired touching area, he just presses the button and it selects the correct function.
Stephen hawking speaks in a normal way. The English alphabet is displayed in the chair display. While the cursor moves through the alphabet Mr. Hawking presses the button to the desired letter to be said. By the time the full sentence is completed the computer now converts the letters to a voice which was artificially created to fit his original one. The Stephen’s disease is not similar to the others, because he is able to press the button with his hand and to communicate in a way while others do not have this chance.
Technical Issues of mind-control machines and ways trying to overcome?
For this new device to be successful in the market needs, to be cheap in order poor patient could afford it, and the most important one is that it must be safest. At the moment all the available interfaces between brain and device do not meet these types of requirements. The biggest risks of these devices are the brain surgery which is rarely done by surgeons because of many risks, and the infection of the brain that any patient can get these devices needs still to be analyzed. However there are hundreds researches being made for these new devices, but the main problem is still left mapping of the brain. As we know there are still unknown parts of the brain and its functions. Unless we do not know which part of the brain controls which function we cannot yet come to an end for a brain interface device.
