The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio
For those who feel like their life sucks, comes quite an extraordinary story. Back in the 1950s, Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) was a mother of ten children with a useless, drunkard husband (Kelly, played by Woody Harrelson) – and she managed the impossible. For years she kept winning one competition after another, which kept her family in a constant supply of either money or various goods that could be used or sold. All without any income to speak of.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Quite a different cup of tea is the next movie, also based on a true story, which is set in Afganistan. Kim Baker (Tina Fey) is a New York journalist who decides to leave her stereotypical lifestyle and put a little bit of adrenalin into it. Facing chaos in the middle of a battle field – adrenalin eventually becomes a drug for her.
El Farode las Orcas (The Lighthouse of the Whales)
Lola (Maribel Verdú) with her young autistic son Tristán travels to a deserted area in Patagonia to visit a man in whom Lola places her only hope to help her son to express his emotions. Beto (Joaquín Furriel) maintains the lighthouse and is mesmerised by the killer orcas in the local waters. Tristián has seen him on TV touching orcas and has expressed positive emotions for the first time in his life.
In 1971 a group of minor criminals accept an incredible bank robbery proposition, consisting exclusively of the security boxes. Their vision of easy money soon turns into a story of bare survival. The entire business is supposed to involve controversial material related to the royal family. As it turns out, money is not the only precious commodity in the boxes – the robbers come in touch with very controversial items that give the owners every incentive to hunt them down.
The Finest Hours
On February 18th, 1952 the coast of New England was hit by a tremendous storm which caused two tankers literally to split in two parts within a short time, and not very far from each other. Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) – a member of the Coast Guard – is ordered by his commanding officer to search for one of the sinking ships – the SS Pendleton. An essentially impossible task turns into the most heroic act in the history of the Coast Guard. Bernie, with two other men, takes on the rescue effort and by overcoming a series of terrible difficulties manages literally to stumble alongside the sinking stern, where in the meantime, the chief engineering officer, Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck), is doing his best to keep the stern with 30 men on board above the surface.
