Scientists in Argentina Strike to Protest Budget Cuts
Thousands of scientists in Argentina have joined a nationwide strike againt the government’s budget cuts, reports Science. Many young researchers began their careers when there was a significant investment in science, but now their career is under the question mark. It is estimated that thousands of scientists joined the strike and as a direct consequence of this action, public transportation, schools and university offices were shut down. Alberto Kornblihtt, head of CONICET’s Institute of Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Neurosciences, said: “We have to stop the brain drain and keep the system alive.”
Brazilian Universities Threatened With 30 Percent Funding Cut
Education officials in Brazil believe universities are ridden with ”Marxist ideology” and for that reason they have decided to cut university funding by 30 percent, reports Rio Times Online. Education Minister Abraham Weintraub said that first three universities that will have their budgets reduced are Bahia, Fluminense and Brasília. He added that the reason for this measure is their poor performance and idological stance. Brazil’s far-right government was accused of undermining country’s Constitution with this move.
3 More U.S. Universities Close Confucius Institutes
3 more universities from the USA have decided to close their Confucius Institutes, reports Inside Higher Ed. In the last 15 months, the total number of the Chinese centres for language education that were closed increased to 15. San Francisco State University, the University of Oregon and Western Kentucky University have decided to drop the institute in favor of Defense Department funding for Chinese language study. The National Defense Authorization Act does not allow universities that have Confucius Institutes to receive the above mentioned funding.
