Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship 2022

Applications are open for the IRE Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship for 2022. This year-long program aims to prepare and support a journalist of color for a solid career in investigative reporting. The fellowship is designed in a manner where the news organization of the journalist can also benefit from their investigative skills. The National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR), a partnership between IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism, is one of IRE’s programs in the fellowship.

Organization

IRE is a non-profit organization that strives to raise the standard of journalism and gives reporters from across the globe a platform to share news ideas, stories, newsgathering techniques, and news sources. Through its Resource Center, IRE offers its members access to thousands of reporting tipsheets and other resources.

Eligibility 

  • U.S. journalists of color who want to improve their investigative skills.
  • Applicants should have at least three years of post-college work experience.
  • Applicants should be currently working with a supportive news organization or working as an independent journalist.
  • Applicants who can propose a well-developed project which would benefit from the training and mentoring the fellow would receive.
  • Students are not eligible.

Deadline

The last day to apply for the fellowship is October 6, 2022.

Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship 2022

Application for Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship 2022 is accepting applications. The opportunity provides a career journalist with unrivaled experience for six to nine months, where they will undertake an investigative project. This project will be under the mentorship of top editors from Reuters London while being overseen by Durham University and having access to university academics and research resources. The prestigious fellowship prepares the selected fellows to develop rigorous, fact-based research and reporting skills.   

Organization

The fellowship has been designed in honor of Sir Harry Evans. He was one of the pioneers of modern investigative journalism. His accolades include his award-winning work as editor of The Northern Echo, The Sunday Times, and The Times — from his celebrated campaign to obtain compensation for Thalidomide children to exposing the cover-up of Soviet spy Kim Philby and unmasking corporate deception at the heart of the DC-10 Paris air crash in 1974. His media peers voted him as the Greatest British Newspaper Editor of all time. 

Benefits

  • The Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship in Investigative Journalism provides the opportunity for early-career journalist to develop their ideas and collaborations in a thriving community of journalists and researchers, including through engagement with the university’s departments, institutes, and colleges.  
  • The successful applicant will be employed by Durham University for the period of the fellowship and will spend time on placement in the Reuters newsroom in London or with another suitable partner selected by Reuters. The successful applicant will also be allocated an appropriate academic supervisor and mentor at Durham University.  
  • The fellowship commands a monthly salary of c.£4,444 per month for each month of fellowship (equivalent to a pro-rata salary of c.£53,333 per year), in addition to a maximum £1,250 per month living stipend and a one-off payment of £1,800 for travel and expenses.
  • Where the successful applicant is an existing employee of a news or media organization and taking a period of leave to pursue the fellowship, Durham University will pay up to a maximum of £12,000 to their employer to cover temporary staff costs, subject to specific terms and conditions.

Eligibility 

  • Qualified applicants will be early in their careers and will have professional journalism experience. 
  • Where a prospective applicant is not currently a journalist but has worked in an investigative reporting capacity in a related professional field (for example: leading human rights or other socio-political publications and campaigns; working as an author or researcher on authoritative investigative work, or developing in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibitions) applications may be considered on a case-by-case basis. 
  • The successful candidate does not need to be currently working in the UK or to have a current UK work visa. The university will support the successful candidate’s application for a suitable visa to undertake the fellowship in the UK. 
  • Applicants should apply as per the instructions and format outlined above.

The closing date for applications is midday BST Monday, August 15, 2022.

USC Annenberg Center For Health Journalism Data Fellowship 2022

Applications for USC Annenberg Center For Health Journalism Data Fellowship 2022 are accepting proposals. The fellowship offers journalists an opportunity to transform their reporting by training them to interview the data as if it were a human source. 

Organization  

The Center for Health Journalism has trained more than 1,200 reporters through in-person fellowships, which include news partnerships, intensive training programs, mentoring and financial support. Working with the Center, fellows produce major investigative and explanatory projects that have won journalism honors and changed laws and policies across the country. Its ‘engaged journalism’ initiative helps journalists reinvent their reporting process to be more equitable and inclusive, allowing community voices to help shape the narrative. The Center for Health Journalism has long been defined by its efforts to advance journalism that addresses health inequities and the role of systemic racism in shortening lives and opportunities and contributing to ill health. The organization promotes newsroom diversity in all of our programs and initiatives. The professional training programs include journalists of color at rates that far exceed representation in America’s newsrooms. The Center also gives priority to mainstream-ethnic media collaborations for its fellowship projects.

Benefits

Following are the benefits that the fellows receive: 

  • A $2,000 stipend to defray reporting costs
  • A four-day in-person, hands-on training in beginner, intermediate or advanced Excel or R-Studio
  • Five months of professional mentorship, including skill-building workshops and ongoing learning

Fellows also are eligible to apply for five months of professional mentorship in engaged journalism and $1,000-$2,000 to support those creative efforts.
