As is the case with many countries, the capital of Spain was moved from city to city such as Toledo, Granada and others until Madrid was finally named as the capital city in the 16th century.
Cost Of Living
A fairly vast place with a population exceeding 3 million, Madrid is immensely popular with international students. It also has the largest number of public universities that offer a wide range of courses. Since it is more than just moderately expensive, an international student must budget for at least 1200 $ towards monthly expenses, apart from the fees.
Most of the universities offer students’ accommodations and depending upon which kind of accommodation you get or choose you pay accordingly. Additionally, as is quite common in most of Spain, there are many families that will host you for a fixed monthly charge. This can be for the room only or room and board or partial board.
Madrid is a magnificent city and offers everything from monuments and museums to green spaces and relatively inexpensive bars and cafes if you keep away from the tourist areas. Many a student budgets to visit a Flamenco Tablaos once in a while to watch the dancers showing their art in candlelit halls, over a sangria and a good meal. Even though Andalucia is the home to Flamenco, Madrid has its share of dancers including some of the more famous ones.
The Sunday flea market at Plaza de Cascorro and Ribera de Curtidores with thousands of stalls is also among the favourite haunts of international students where they go for the local food and affordable second hand furniture.
Added to the tourists from all across the world, Madrid has an immigrant population of almost 11 percent who have come from many countries across the globe and an international student feels quite at home here. Same as in the rest of Spain, an evening out means starting at around 10 p.m. and having a great time until the wee hours of the morning.
