- Believe in Yourself
Setting and implementing goals is useless if you do not believe you can achieve them. You must change your attitude from, “cannot” to “can do” before anything else.
I remember when I was 50 pounds overweight and I told my friends I wanted to start losing weight by exercising on a daily basis. Some of them said they couldn’t see me doing it, but this negativity fueled my desire to prove them wrong. The only voice that mattered was my own, and I told myself I could do it. It was the first step toward achieving my goal.
- Let the World Know
Write it down. Talk about it with family, friends, and co-workers. Let people know via social media. These positive affirmations hold you accountable for your actions.
What I did when I wanted to lose weight was post a status on Facebook stating that I wanted to finally get in shape and live an active lifestyle. I would then post pictures of my meals to show people that I was practicing what I preached.
- Take Baby Steps
The term “aim small, miss small” can be applied to setting and implementing your goals. I didn’t start eating better and exercising as hard as I do now right away. It took a lot of time. I would slowly cut out sugary foods in my meals, and go a little harder each work out. Eventually, my works outs became my warm ups, and junk foods became undesirable.
Whatever you are trying to do – whether it’s lose weight, learn a new skill such as a language or a musical instrument – it is best to remember that the road to your goals is a marathon, and not a sprinting contest. If you walk to your goal with steady steps, one foot in front of the other, you will be able to pick up the pace and ultimately gain more confidence towards achieving your goal. If you start with the toughest task first, you have a higher percentage of burning out.
Many people have goals but do not have the tools to implement them. If you’ve tried to set your goals and have failed in achieving them, then I recommend investing in a few self-help books that focus on this particular problem. One book that I’ve read, and will continue to reread in the future, is Stephen Covey’s bestselling book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” Every page is loaded with helpful information that has helped me in every area of my life, and I am sure will help you too.
It has taken me years of trial and error to find out what has worked best for me, and I’m still sharpening my skills on how to best implement my goals. My physical transformation a testament to what I’ve just shared with you. If there’s anything I hope you take from this post, it’s that it inspired you to start something you’ve always wanted to do.
