Funded Clay Artist Residency in the USA

Clay artists are invited to apply for the 12-month paid residency at Mudflat Studios located in Somerville, Massachusetts. The organization offers the program at no cost to the participants in addition to monthly stipends and opportunities for the resident to teach and sell their work. The deadline is on 16 April 2021.

Applications for the 2021-22 residency will be available Spring 2021 – see below. Application due date is April 16, 2021.

Mudflat Studios is a non-profit organization in Somerville, Massachusetts, offering classes, workshops, outreach programing and events focusing on the ceramic arts. They foster an environment where students and artists can be creative, receive a rich and varied educational experience and participate in a large artistic community.

The 12-month residency is held on 1 September – 31 August annually. Residents benefit from 24/7 access to a private 90 square foot studio space, a monthly stipend of $75, to be applied to clay materials and firing costs; a monthly stipend of up to $200 for housing assistance, paid teaching opportunities in educational programs, and solo exhibition and reception at Mudflat in July to showcase work created during the residency year. Artists are expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week in their studio. They are required to work 5 hours per week for Mudflat, assisting with technical jobs. Additionally, residents will need to deliver two public presentations covering their work.

Main criteria

Applicants should have knowledge of a variety of clay techniques and some kiln firing experience, the ability to work independently, and enthusiasm and willingness to be part of an urban community clay center.
