From Consumerism to Creativity (Part V): Practicing Giving

"The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving."

Albert Einstein

The ugliest way Ego operates is that never-ending process of consumption which gives us a faded illusion of satisfaction. But since this feeling (like everything created by Ego) is quite a short-lived we cannot leave the circle and keep on looking for more new things and impressions. It makes us greedy and stuck just on receiving, but the main Law of the Universe is that there should be a balance between receiving and giving because they are different aspects of the Universal energy flow. And this is what every of us can start with to help the world get to the better – practicing Giving.

Practicing the Law of Giving is actually very simple: if you want joy, give joy to others; if you want love, learn to give love; if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation; if you want material affluence, help others to become materially affluent. Infact, the easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want. Deepak Chopra

Yes, Giving is not about giving material things only – in fact, the most powerful forms of giving are non-material and literally cost nothing to your wallet: the gifts of caring, attention, compassion, love and appreciation.

The only rule here is that you should give with all your heart. If you feel that through the act of giving you lose something this gift is not truly given. Don’t be scared – a candle loses nothing by lighting other candles.

Where you can start? Here are some ideas:

Making donations to nonprofits

Volunteering in orphanages, animal shelters and hospices

Helping lonely aging people

Giving more attention to your family and friends. How long ago did you visit your granny, call your parents, sending a real (not virtual) Christmas postcard to your best friend?

Smile to everyone you meet. Wish them happiness.

The more you give the more you receive back. If you never practiced generosity firstly it could feel a bit uncomfortable, but slowly you begin to realize that there’s more to life than what you own and can hold onto. Your attachment to things will destroy; you will stop use things as means of self-enhancement. By carrying the give-receive balance you will get the energy to Create, because it is one more form of Giving.
