Content Sharing: How To Not Get Penalized For Copyright Infringement On Facebook

Facebook Live was launched in 2016, and with it came a new concern towards fighting copyright infringement. Users have been sued for live streaming paper view events, and so far, Facebook has not come up with a viable solution to the issue. If you don’t want to find yourself on the receiving end of a lawsuit, here are a few tips and reminders to save you from the headache.

Understand your preferred social network’s rules for copywriting

Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, there will be a copyright section that will lay down the basic rules to follow towards content sharing. This article will focus on Facebook’s copyright rules.

Your best bet: share your own content

If you are unsure that whatever you are about to share will violate Facebook’s copyright laws, it’s best to leave it alone and simply write down your own thoughts and input.

Understand fair use

Fair use allows users to share copyright material without asking for permission from the copyright holder. This can include: criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research. However, this is a doctrine held in U.S. copyright law, and not every country has this rule in writing, so make sure you check with your country’s specific copyright laws before you do share something.

Don’t record questionable content

Paper view, T.V. shows, and movies are normally protected under copyright law, so it’s best to set the record button off and enjoy the moment without posting it on to social media.

There are many issues that Facebook and other social media networks will have to deal with in the future when it comes to copyright infringement. That will be their challenge, while those who share content can do their part and become aware of what they are sharing.
