During working days what we hate the most are our alarms. But what if there is a scenario in which you could wake up by default when daylight appears? Wouldn’t that be sublime?
Becoming a morning person was something I had set my mind on for a long time. I had a friend of mine, who would tell me about her blissful routine of waking up at dawn, taking it all too easy, listening to music, working out, and then coming to work. I was amazed and I kept asking her to give me some tips on how I could do the same thing for myself. Although she did try to convince me to wake up early and work out, I was not able to do it, and at some point, I gave up. I thought it was maybe biological, and I would not be able to get out of bed that early even if someone promised me the world as a reward.
But years passed. Life became more dynamic, stress increased and the burden of my day was overwhelming me. So a bit before 2021 ended, I decided I would take things slow. And not rushing out of the door filled with anxiety first thing in the morning — was something I was committed to doing. Here’s how I did it.
Finding Things You Look Forward to Doing Early in The Morning
It makes sense we don’t want to wake up early in the morning because most of us know we have to get out there, be productive, and close ourselves within the walls of an office. But this shouldn’t necessarily be the case. You have the opportunity to wake up, brew yourself a nice warm coffee, and cuddle with your pet while you watch the beautiful daylight covering the earth. Look for perspectives like these, that will make you want to get out of bed and get moving!
Appreciating The Silence
When I started waking up by 5:30 or 6:00 a.m., for me it was utterly fulfilling to be able to watch the roads all empty, and listen to the way the silence within my apartment filled me up with peace. I would sit by my window for a little while, sipping my coffee, and watch as the roads slowly would start gaining some life, with a few individuals heading to work, and life becoming more dynamic as the morning hours went by. The silence was most welcomed, especially in the days I knew I would get overwhelmed by communicating with several people (a little bit of an introverted mind here).
Practicing a Few Holistic Rituals
You don’t really have to go all the way to doing yoga first thing in the morning. Of course, this is surely recommended and welcomed, however, you can do other things that will lift you up as well. For me, these holistic rituals involve: brewing coffee, watering my plants and exposing them towards the morning sun, curling up with my doggo for a little while, and reading a few pages of a book. I also love to listen to sweet, morning playlists with a little bit of a jazzy groove in the background.
As someone who hasn’t been eating breakfast for over 10 years, rushing into lunch and ordering whatever was available at that time – I can totally say that eating breakfast has changed the way I feel in the morning. It has certainly impacted my productivity as well. So I recommend that you listen to your body, and feed yourself with food you think is good for you in those early hours.
Try Reflecting on The Day Ahead & Use a Journal
I’ve started using a journal just recently because I have noticed how it helps me remain more at ease with my thoughts. It also provides me some sort of introspection, as I write and then read whatever it is in my head. I try to do this early in the morning, to also get my ducks in a row for things I have to do throughout the day. Sometimes the evening is also good for journaling, particularly if you’re feeling rather blue.
Bottom line is that I can finally say I have become a morning person. I still haven’t managed to work out that early, but this isn’t something that I am dwelling upon way too much. People have different routines, and what works for me, may not work that much for others. But I suggest you give these tips a try and then see if you’re made to be a night owl or a refreshed early bird!
