Climate change is a reality that is inevitable. However, what is imperative is that we acknowledge the need to take necessary steps to preserve and conserve the environmental resources for future generations. It is highly essential that corporates and organizations understand their responsibility toward climate change and provide for the climate change leaders who are spearheading the movement to protect the environment and its resources. 

Highlighting the efforts of some organizations, this week’s opportunity digest of Youth Time Magazine brings to you prestigious awards and fellowships that the world’s leading organizations and corporations are providing to budding climate activists. Read up to know more. 

 

The HEY Global Climate Fund

Applications are open for The HEY Global Climate Fund for the year 2022 for young climate activists on their projects. The fund aims to support three applicants and their projects based on their convictions about climate change. 

Organization

The Ashley Lashley Foundation was launched in December 2019, building on four years of activism by Ashley Lashley, a Barbadian UNICEF Youth Advocate with a wide focus on social development issues, particularly as it relates to health, the environment, and women’s rights.

Benefits 

The top three proposals will be awarded a grant for their projects. The selected projects will be rewarded $5000 each. After being awarded this grant, recipients will update and show the results of their projects to the Evaluation Committee of the Ashley Lashley Foundation.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must submit a proposal based on a project or idea surrounding the topics: Climate Change and Health, Climate Change and Gender, Climate Advocacy, and Climate Entrepreneurship.
  • To be eligible for this grant, all applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 27.
  • Shortlisted applicants must be prepared to conduct an interview between September 14-16, 2022 with The Ashley Lashley Foundation’s Evaluation Committee, where applicants need to present their project or idea. Three projects will be selected and awarded a grant of $5000.

Deadline

The last day to apply for the opportunity is September 2, 2022.

International Climate Protection Fellowship

With the International Climate Protection Fellowships, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables prospective leaders working practically to implement a research-based proposal in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conservation during a one-year stay in Germany.

Organization

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsors scientists and scholars, irrespective of academic discipline and nationality. The organization strengthens Germany as a research location through international research exchanges. The aim is to support the sponsorship recipients during their entire lifetimes and actively promote international understanding, scientific progress, and development.

Benefits

The monthly fellowship amount – depending on career stage is 2,000 euros, 2,300 euros, or 2,500 euros; the following benefits can be granted:

Eligibility  

  • First university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent), completed less than 12 years previously (February 1, 2023)
  • Leadership skills demonstrated by initial experience in leadership positions and/or
  • appropriate references
  • Extensive work experience (at least 48 months at the time of application) in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conservation
  • Choice of a research-based project in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conversation
  • A detailed statement by a host in Germany, including a mentoring agreement; details of the proposal must be discussed with the prospective host prior to application
  • Two expert references by individuals qualified to comment on the candidate’s professional personal and, if applicable, academic eligibility as well as their leadership potential
  • Citizenship of a non-European transition or developing country (see list of countries), which is also the applicant’s habitual residence and place of work
  • Very good knowledge of English and/or German, documented by appropriate language certificates

The last day to apply for the fellowship is February 1, 2023.

Allianz Climate Risk Award

Launched in 2017, the Allianz Climate Risk Award acknowledges and rewards young scientists whose works shed light on the nexus between climate change and the extreme weather events that threaten millions of livelihoods and present ways these populations could be better protected. It targets Ph.D. candidates and post-doctoral researchers whose research focuses on reducing the risk of extreme weather events that are intensified by climate change and fostering resilience by applying technological solutions.

Benefits

In addition to having all expenses paid for, all four finalists receive cash prizes ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 euros to support their research.

Eligibility 

  • University students currently pursuing either a Ph.D. degree or a post-doc, as well as recent Ph.D. graduates or recent post-doc graduates
  • Research applicable to the focus and topic of the award
  • Completed application form

Deadline 

The deadline for submission of the applications is September 30, 2022
