First ever woman becomes the head of a Greek university
Chrisi Vigilaki became the first woman to be given the highest official position at a Greek university, reports Greek reporter. She was accredited with the position of Prytanis, which is the equivalent of Chancellor of Rector in the English speaking world. The University of the Aegean, located on the island of Lesbos is the first university to make such a move, and during her speech, Vigilaki promised to make the efforts to maintain and expand the prestigious status of the university. The University of the Aegean is a public, multi-campus university located in the islands of Lesbos, Samos, Chios, Syros, Rhodes and Lemnos.
''Highest paid'' vice-chancellor replaced
The University of Bath decided to replace the highest paid vice-chancellor in the UK Dame Glynis Breakwell, who is earning a staggering £468,000, reports BBC. Following a dispute over her salary in August, she decided to step down and new vice-chancellor, professor Ian White was brought in. He will be earning annual salary of £266,000. Last November, many students and staff protested and called for Dame Glynis to step down because of her excessive pay. President of the University of Bath Students' Union, Eve Alcock stated: "Students and staff had input and representation throughout and so we had the chance hear about Ian White's values and vision for the university... I am confident that Ian White is the right choice. We can all look forward to an exciting and bright future for our university."
New $81 million Al-Ain university campus
The foundation stone for Abu Dhabi University's campus in Al Ain has been laid, reports Arabian Business. The statement says that construction and expansion of facilities will cost $81 million dollars and the overall area of the new campus will be 45,000 square meteres. The first phase is scheduled to be completed by September next year. Some of the works for 2018-2019 academic year have already been finished across campuses in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al-Ain. Enhancements include improved community centre, a mosque, a student guidance centre, improved laboratories and classrooms and sports fields.
