Palaces, culture, museums, music, art, history, architecture, the Danube river, the capital of Austria has it all. Additional to this is the cosmopolitan environment with a milieu of students from many parts of the world.

Unlike many parts of Europe the population has not remained stagnant and is now reaching towards 1.9 million and out of this, university students make up about 10 percent of the dwellers. A good part of the residents of this city speak English.

If you are lucky enough to be a citizen of the EU your education shall be free of charge otherwise you will pay a nominal 1500 Euros per year. If you’re looking to work and study in Austria and if you’re a non EU citizen you’ll need a work permit and be allowed to work a certain number of hours each week. This does not apply to the citizens of the EU countries who are allowed to work freely. Similar rules as to the EU citizens apply to the citizens of most of the countries of the European Economic Area.

An excellent command over the German language is a must. Alternatively, if you find your course being taught in English as well you will need a working knowledge of German and a good command over English and must prove it through passing TOEFL, IELTS or the C1 level.

If you have planned well in advance we would recommend what has come to be known as Tandem learning. This is where you visit the websites of the universities and other websites relating to students and identify the those who are willing to invest their time in teaching you German and in turn learning English or another language from you. This you can easily organize over teleconferencing such as Skype.

We cover public universities in our articles. At the same time it’s relevant to state that most European cities have private universities as well where the fees can be from expensive to exorbitant, sometimes the same as the universities in the USA. Here is the list of the universities in Vienna with their websites which are quite comprehensive. They offer a host of courses starting for the Bachelor’s degree and leading right up to PhD and also medical courses.

Cost of Living

According to the index the cost of living per person, without accommodation, is approximately USD 860. For about 1000 Euros per month, in the opinion of the writer one can manage fairly well inclusive of shared accommodation.

As for entertainment and fun as I mentioned the city has it all and in any case when students want to have fun anywhere, they will.
