Five Warning Signs You Need A Career Change NOW

Change is a scary thing, especially if it involves your career. Many people get stuck in a career direction they dislike but refuse to make a change because they cannot overcome the fear of the unknown. If the paycheck is good and the office is close to home, why change your job, you may ask. If you are not appreciated enough or at all or if the work is mindless, if you spend most of your day surfing the Internet and you cannot wait to go home, you are in dire need of a career change. Here are some warning signs to watch for – they will tell you if it’s time to change your career or simply make some adjustments.

  • You ONLY work for the money

Lack of money creates stress, but there comes a time when even if the paycheck makes you happy, it’s not enough anymore. If you feel bored and if Sunday is a sad day only because it announces a new work week, you need to change your career.

You might think that changing your job is the answer, but if you don’t like what you are doing, you clearly need to work in another domain.

  • You dream about having a different career

If you wish you were a businessman, but you work in sales or you dream about being a stay-at-home mom, but you are a lawyer, no matter how much money you make or how many compliments you receive, you will not be happy until you change your career.

No matter how bold your dream is, it is better to try and fail than never to try at all.

  • You don’t want to tell people what you do

Consider the following scenario: you are at a cocktail party and you are having a conversation with your spouse’s colleagues who want to know what you do for a living. If you wish you could tell them a lie or you feel too embarrassed to reply, here is your answer –your embarrassment is a clear indication that it is time to change your career into something you can be proud of.

  • You are bored and you’ve lost your passion

Some of the best things about working in an industry that you like are the passion, the energy and the time you are willing to sacrifice for the sake of your job. However, if you feel zoned out and you have totally lost your enthusiasm, it is time to find a new career.

Tip: If you can turn your hobby/passion into a career, you will never get bored!

  • Where do you see yourself five years from now?

You should be familiar with this question if you’ve gone through an interview, but the more you think about it, the more relevant it sounds. It all depends on what you see when you look into the future of your career. If you are excited about where it’s going or you have clear goals in your head, there is nothing to worry about.

However, if you think that you are in a place that prevents you from growing [professionally] or you consider yourself a big fish in a small pond, you must move on or be prepared to pay a price later in your career when your CV does not help you to get a raise.

What you have to do now is review these signs and evaluate how they apply [or not] to your career.
